"Rumpelstiltskin" (/ ˌ r ʌ m p ə l ˈ s t ɪ l t s k ɪ n / RUMP-əl-STILT-skin; [1] German: Rumpelstilzchen, IPA: [ʁʊmpl̩ʃtiːltsçn̩]) is a German fairy tale [2] collected by the Brothers Grimm in the 1812 edition of Children's and Household Tales. [2]
In the Vault of the Dark One, the Darkness enters Hook, making him remember all of the darkest moments of his life, including the time when Rumplestiltskin killed Milah and took his hand, when Rumplestiltskin took his heart as part of a (failed) plan to absorb Emma into Merlin's hat, and when Emma became the Dark One.
At another part of town, Hook and Alice have a conversation but from afar. When Regina showed up at Facilier's office, she finds Weaver tied up and released him and warned her about the Wish Realm Rumpelstiltskin. Speaking of the Alternate Dark One, he surprised Henry at his apartment just as Henry, Ella, and Lucy were celebrating their reunion.
The Dark One knocks him aside and attempts to open a box, but is repelled by an enchantment placed on it by The Sorcerer. The Apprentice tells the Dark One that the box cannot be opened by someone who has succumbed to the darkness in their heart. The Dark One vanishes in a rage, and the Apprentice says that no Dark One will ever open the box.
The episode received excellent reviews from critics. Praise went to Espenson's script, the new take on the tale of Rumpelstiltskin, and the performances of Carlyle, Hershey, and especially McGowan, who many reviewers felt should have been nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series, but was not.
A Dark One, Rumplestiltskin, later manages to steal the hat, but it is then taken by Princess Anna of Arendelle. Some time later, Ingrid obtains the hat and gives it back to the Apprentice in exchange for a portal to the real world for Ingrid to complete her family.
As they enter the library to check for any evidence, a voice starts calling for the two, and a face of flame in a candelabra is revealed to be Lumière, who tells them Rumplestiltskin had him entrapped in this form as punishment. He directs them to a key with a triangular sign on it, which opens the vault where the first Dark One was created.
