Elstree Studios is a generic term which can refer to several current and demolished British film studios and television studios based in or around the town of Borehamwood and village of Elstree in Hertfordshire, England. Production studios have been located in the area since 1914 when film production began there.
The site is now also adjacent to Eldon Avenue which did not exist when the site first opened as a film studio in 1914, and was the first of several sites collectively known as "Elstree Studios". In 1960 the film studios were converted to television studios used by the former ITV contractor ATV and, since 1984, by the BBC.
The reason given is: due to a change in scope, now includes some out-of-scope productions, i.e., shot at Borehamwood/Elstree studios other than those in Shenley Road. Elstree Studios on Shenley Road, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire is a British film and television production centre operated by Elstree Film Studios Limited. One of several facilities historically referred to as Elstree Studios , the Shenley Road studios originally opened in 1925.
Elstree is perhaps best known for multiple Elstree Film Studio complexes, where many films were made, including BBC Elstree Centre, where the TV soap opera EastEnders is shot. This production centre is actually in Borehamwood. The local newspaper is the Borehamwood and Elstree Times. [2]
