Bagan (Burmese: ပုဂံ; MLCTS: pu.gam, IPA: [bəɡàɰ̃]; formerly Pagan) is an ancient city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Myanmar. The Gawdawpalin Temple (Burmese: ကန်တော့ပလ္လင်ဘုရား, IPA: [ɡɔ́dɔ̰pəlɪ̀ɰ̃ pʰəjá]) is a Buddhist temple located in Bagan, Myanmar. Construction of the pagoda began in 1203 during the reign of Sithu II (1174–1211) [ 2 ] and completed on 26 March 1227 [ 3 ] during the reign of Htilominlo (1211–1235).

Original Pagoda as seen in 1868 destroyed in the 1975 earthquake. The name 'Bupaya' is made up of two words 'bu' and 'paya' in the Burmese language. As the pagoda is bulbous and in the shape of gourd or pumpkin, the word 'Bu' in Burmese, which means "pumpkin" or "gourd" is the affixed to 'paya'. The word 'paya' means "pagoda".
According to legend, the pagoda was initially built by a wealthy man called U Baw Gyaw and his wife. It was raised from its original height of 55.5 feet (16.9 m) to a height of 87 feet (27 m) by King Saw Lu (1077-1084) of Bagan. [1]
