"Dry September" is a short story by William Faulkner. Published in 1931, it describes a lynch mob forming (despite ambiguous evidence) on a hot September evening to avenge an alleged (and unspecified) insult or attack upon a white woman by a black watchman, Will. [1]
In 2009, he received critical acclaim for his performance as recently retired farmer Abner Meecham in the independent film That Evening Sun. [5] He also portrayed Francis Preston Blair in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln (2012). [6] [7] In 2003, Holbrook was honored with the National Humanities Medal by President George W. Bush. [8]
Faulkner once headed a troop of Boy Scouts but the administrators removed him from his position after the release of the book. [7] Gene D. Phillips of Loyola University of Chicago wrote that because audiences were preoccupied with lurid scenes instead of its moral philosophy, the book was a "best seller for all of the wrong reasons".
