Sharjah has been ruled by the Al Qasimi dynasty since the 18th century. The city is a center for culture and industry, and alone contributes 7.4% of the GDP of the United Arab Emirates. [4] The city covers an approximate area of 235 km 2 and has a population of over 1,800,000 (2022–2023). [1]
As part of the Expo 2020 development in Dubai, an extension of the Red Line named Route 2020 [7] announced in December 2015 and originally due to be completed mid-2019. The extension project created a new section of the line from Jabal Ali to the Expo 2020 site, near Al Maktoum International Airport.
