Arkansaurus measured about 4.6 metres (15 ft) long and weighed about 380.5 kilograms (839 lb). [8] [9] Examination of the holotype consisting of a nearly complete right foot suggests that Arkansaurus was similar to most ornithomimosaurians of the Early Cretaceous, with the strong curvature of the foot claws being the only exception: most ornithomimosaurians had flat claws. [7]
The ornithomimosaur Arkansaurus fridayi lived at this time, known only from remains of its foot discovered in 1972. [12] The seas of southern and eastern Arkansas began to shrink during the early Cenozoic. Sharks and oysters were still present in its sea waters. [4]
The museum was one of three state organizations to receive a mold of the Arkansaurus fridayi fossil - "The Arkansas Dinosaur" - and also had a statue of it. [1] It became the Museum of Science and Natural History in 1964, and the Arkansas Museum of Science and History in 1983.
