Year-round three vessels are used for domestic travel to the islands, with one of those vessels equipped for international travel between Anacortes and Sidney, BC (Vancouver Island) during the spring, summer and fall. Swartz Bay is a 22.7 ha (56.1-acre) [2] ferry terminal and a major transportation facility at Swartz Bay in North Saanich, British Columbia. It is located 32 km (20 mi) north of Victoria on Vancouver Island. The terminal is part of the BC Ferries system, as well as part of Highway 17.

The new service, known as the British Columbia Ferry Corporation ordered two ships constructed from shipyards in British Columbia. Sidney was ordered from Victoria Machinery Depot in Victoria, with the yard number 85 and was laid down on May 9, 1959. [1] [2] The vessel was launched on October 6, 1959 and completed in May 1960. It has a population of approximately 11,583. Sidney is located just east of Victoria International Airport, and about 6 km (4 mi) south of BC Ferries' Swartz Bay Terminal. The town is also the only Canadian port-of-call in the Washington State Ferries system, with ferries running from Sidney to the San Juan Islands and Anacortes.
