This college was acknowledged by the Dhaka Education Board on 19 May 1971. On 31 May 1972, honours courses were introduced in Bangla and chemistry department under the University of Dhaka. M.A. (part-1) was started in this college in English, political science, botany, zoology and maths subjects on 28 January 1995.
In 1965, the college opened a graduate course and a science group in the day branch. In the academic year 1970-71, the women's wing of the day wing of the main building of the college was opened. In 1972 the women's wing was shifted to Isgan High School building not far from the college.
The Chittagong Government Commercial Institute was established in 1966 in Bakalia in Chittagong. Later, the government of Bangladesh opened all commercial institutes and provided teaching opportunities in all subjects. In that context, in May 2016, Chittagong Government Commercial Institute was converted into Bakalia Government College, Chittagong.

The previous name of this academy was NTRAMS which stands for "National Training and Research Academy for Multilingual Shorthand" . It was established in 1984, at Bogra, for developing Secretarial Science and business management education system in Bangladesh. NACTAR, which stands for "National Academy for Computer Training and Research (NACTAR)".
The Governor of East Pakistan, A. K. Fazlul Huq, inaugurated science courses in 1956. [6] Governor of East Pakistan, Zakir Husain, inaugurated graduate courses at the college. [6] After the Independence of Bangladesh in 1971, the college was renamed as Shaheed Suhrawardy College. [6]
The college was nationalized on March 1, 1980. With the efforts and cooperation of former student of Tolaram College and former Member of Parliament Mr. Shamim Osman, Honors in 12 subjects and MA courses in 05 subjects were opened in Government Tolaram College in 1996-97 session.
At present the institution offer to study Higher Secondary education class 11–12. Bedside this, it has degree course under National University of Bangladesh. Recently the institution starts undergraduate honours course under National University of Bangladesh.
