The Church History Library (CHL) is a research center and archives building housing materials chronicling the history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). The library is owned by the Church and opened in 2009 in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah .
The 665,000-square-foot (61,800 m 2) Harold B. Lee Library is one of the largest libraries in the western United States and contains 98 miles (158 km) of shelving. Lee's teachings as an apostle were the 2002 course of study in the LDS Church's Sunday Relief Society and Melchizedek priesthood classes. [11]
The RSC (sometimes called the Center for Religious Studies in its early years) [2] [3] was founded in 1975 by Jeffrey R. Holland, dean of Religious Education at BYU. [4] Upon the recommendation of BYU president Dallin H. Oaks, the establishment of the RSC was approved by BYU's Board of Trustees in early 1976. [3]
The office of president over both programs was established in 2015. The school and seminary names were changed on June 14, 2019, to the Free Lutheran Bible College and Seminary.
