At the time, Al Bateen Executive Airport (then called Abu Dhabi International Airport) was the main international airport (in addition to Abu Dhabi Airfield). Access was difficult as it was located on Abu Dhabi Island which was connected to the mainland by only one bridge. Also, the city was growing, making it harder for the airport to expand. [5]
Sir Bani Yas Airport began operating in 2008 and primarily serves tourists visiting the island. The airport is located 250 kilometres southwest of the coast of Abu Dhabi in the Western Region. [ 3 ] The airport currently has no schedule services but previously had domestic flights to Abu Dhabi .

Al Bateen Executive Airport (Arabic: مطار البطين, IATA: AZI, ICAO: OMAD) is a dedicated business jet international airport located 6.5 nautical miles (12.0 km; 7.5 mi) south-east of the city centre of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. [2] The airport is on the Abu Dhabi island. Other tenants include aviation assets of the UAE government.
