DSB-SC is basically an amplitude modulation wave without the carrier, therefore reducing power waste, giving it a 50% efficiency. DSB-SC is used for the stereo subcarrier in FM stereo, so it seems to me that it is widely used. It has the special feature that the output is zero when the (modulating) input is zero, which is often convenient. On the other hand, it requires the receiver to have another way to regenerate the carrier.
