Greenlee County was created in 1909 and named for Mason Greenlee who was an early settler in the Clifton area. It was Arizona's 14th county and formed from part of Graham County, which opposed the formation because Graham County would lose considerable revenue.
The Yuma–Duncan route became part of the transcontinental Southern National Highway auto trail in 1913. In 1914, Arizona's highway system was further reorganized into a better-funded and organized network of early state highways. The Yuma–Duncan route between Globe and New Mexico was added to the newly designated Roosevelt Dam Highway.
Arizona State Route 75, abbreviated as SR 75, is a state highway in eastern Arizona that stretches from its junction with U.S. Route 191 and State Route 78 near Greenlee County Airport south to its junction with U.S. Route 70 in Duncan. It is primarily a shortcut for north and southbound traffic between Duncan and Clifton.
