Don't be shaving your beard or getting a dramatic haircut or wear clothes you wouldn't normally wear. Wear your favorite clothes and if that is not dressy enough than you are doing something too formal for a first date. To clarify you favorite going out and about clothes, don't be looking like you are doing laundry.

Eventually you'll do a bunch of dates and decide that you should commit to each other. Bam, you have a girlfriend. I need to start step 1. I've never even asked a girl out.
