Grauman was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, [1] the son of David Grauman (1851–1921) and Rosa Goldsmith (1853–1936). [2] Grauman's parents were theatrical performers on show circuits. [3] They were both Jewish. Grauman and his father went to Dawson City, Yukon, for the Gold Rush when he was a young man. He worked there as a paperboy.
