Graupner was founded by Johannes Graupner in Stuttgart in 1930 as a scale model manufacturer. Two years later, the company was moved to Kirchheim unter Teck. In 1935, the first glider model was introduced, and in 1938, the first building plans and materials for ship scale modeling were produced.
Trumpeter plastic models of ships are produced in 1:200, 1:350, 1:500 and 1:700 scale, mainly 1:350 and 1:700. Trumpeter has a cooperation with Japanese ship model manufacturer Pit-Road for kits in 1:700 scale, sold as Pit-Road in Japan and Trumpeter in the rest of the world.

Tamiya diverted the die to make a radio-controlled car (RC car) version of the Porsche 934. Although sale of the plastic model of the 1:12 Porsche 934 was poor, the RC car version was a great success. In 2006, Tamiya choose the 934 Turbo RSR as the product to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Tamiya's RC car series.
