Carters Lake has an average depth of 200 feet (61 m) and a maximum depth of 450 feet (140 m). [2] Fall Colors at Carters Lake. Carters Lake, owned by the US Army Corps of Engineers, is a man-made lake without private docks or houses along its shore. [2]
It is the only house that the Carters ever owned, and the family occupied it from 1961 until Jimmy Carter's death in 2024. The lake is the deepest manmade reservoir east of the Mississippi River and deepest lake in Georgia. [citation needed] The created lake is more than 450 feet (140 m) deep and has 62 miles (100 km) of shoreline without any private docks or other development. [citation needed]
The park headquarters and visitor center are located at the Island Ford Unit of the park, at 1978 Island Ford Parkway in Sandy Springs, Georgia. The Chattahoochee River is a stocked trout stream [3] with 23 species of game fish. Year-round fishing is available with a Georgia fishing license and a trout stamp.
Per the NPS, the park, which opened in 1987, “interprets President Carter’s life and presidency in relation to Plains, Georgia, and preserve the resources associated with that story.
In Murray County, the river is impounded by Carters Dam, forming Carters Lake behind the dam. (The lake is located mostly in Gilmer County). Completed in 1977, Carters Dam is the tallest earthen dam east of the Mississippi River. [3] The Coosawattee River leaves the dam flowing west (directly into the Reregulation Reservoir).
Fishing on Lake Burton C.1924. Lake Burton was constructed in a deep valley located along a 10-mile (16 km) section of the Tallulah River. [2] Its dam was closed on December 22, 1919, and was declared full August 18, 1920. The dam is a gravity concrete dam, with a height of 128 feet (39 m) and a span of 1,100 feet (340 m).
