In their interaction with earlier Greek philosophers who accepted this argument/dictum, Christian authors who accepted creatio ex nihilo, like Origen, simply denied the essential premise that something cannot come from nothing, and viewed it as a presumption of a limitation of God's power; God was seen as in fact able to create something out of ...
Creatio ex nihilo is the doctrine that all matter was created out of nothing by God in an initial or a beginning moment where the cosmos came into existence. [13] [14] It has been suggested that ex nihilo creation can also be found in creation stories from ancient Egypt (the Memphite Theology), [15] the Rig Veda (X:129, also known as Nasadiya Sukta), [16] and many animistic cultures in Africa ...
The question does not include the timing of when anything came to exist. Some have suggested the possibility of an infinite regress, where, if an entity can't come from nothing and this concept is mutually exclusive from something, there must have always been something that caused the previous effect, with this causal chain (either deterministic or probabilistic) extending infinitely back in time.
A "cause" is that which brings something into effect. If an item has the quality X formally, it has it in the literal or strict sense. An effect cannot be produced by nothing. A circle of causes is impossible. Therefore, an effect must be produced by something else. An accidentally ordered causal series cannot exist without an essentially ordered series. Each member in an accidentally ordered series (except a possible first) exists via causal activity of a prior member.
