Founded in Marion, Ohio in August, 1884 by Henry Barnhart, Edward Huber and George W. King as the Marion Steam Shovel Company, the company grew through sales and acquisitions throughout the 20th century. The company changed its name to Marion Power Shovel Company in 1946 to reflect the industry's change from steam power to diesel power.
When metals were scarce during World War II, Andersen began producing windows using parts less metal and other material to support the war effort. Andersen Corporation also made wooden ammunition boxes for the war effort, which resulted in "Excellence in Production" ("E") awards from the United States Army , and United States Navy .
The Silver Spade was a giant power shovel used for strip mining in southeastern Ohio. Manufactured by Bucyrus-Erie, South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the model 1950-B was one of two of this model built, the other being its sister ship, the GEM of Egypt. Its sole function was to remove the earth and rock overburden from the coal seam.
The GEM was one of three in the service of the Hanna Coal Company, which by 1970, had been strip mining in Ohio for decades, joined by The Tiger and The Mountaineer. [ 5 ] Of the three, the GEM of Egypt was the largest, and went into service upon the official opening of the Egypt Valley mine in January 1967. [ 5 ]
