The Seat of the Clan Mackenzie, Castle Leod is widely considered to be the inspiration behind Castle Leoch, the home of the Clan Mackenzie, in Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series. It was considered as a filming location for the TV series, however, Doune Castle was selected due to its ease of location.
Eilean Donan is a famous castle on a nearby island. The village itself runs alongside the water hosting a variety of village homes, one tiny shop, a hotel and two bars. St Duthac's Catholic Church dates from 1860 and was designed by architect Joseph A. Hansom.
The two castle do look alike, especialy if you see Duart from the seaward side, but a close look at the movie will reveal that Eilean Donan does not feature. This myth arose from various Tourist information publications which were written by people who quite obviously had never visited either Duart nor Eilean Donan.
