The hotel was added to the National Register of Historic Places on February 10, 1983. [1] It is the only remaining hotel in Springfield which dates from the 1920s or earlier. [2] The hotel is no longer in operation, having switched over to apartments. The building is now referred to as the St. Nicholas Apartments.
[7] During the 1940s, it was the first grand hotel purchased by Sheraton Hotels and Resorts, (which was then based in Springfield.) After its purchase, the Kimball was renamed the Sheraton -Kimball Hotel and remained a 4-star property until the early 1980s, when it began a long conversion into The Kimball Towers Condominiums.
Built in 1895 and advertised as "Springfield's leading commercial and tourist house," the Worthy Hotel was Springfield's finest hotel until the opening of the Hotel Kimball in 1911. Located only two blocks south of Springfield Union Station and featuring 250 rooms, the Worthy Hotel's period of greatest significance was from 1895-1925. [ 2 ]

Haynes operated his shop and a hotel on the site, and the post office also operated in the corner space of the building until the 1880s. The hotel was one of the largest in the city of the time, feature a grand central lobby with a skylight. It was eventually eclipsed by the Hotel Charles, which was larger and located nearer the railroad. [2]
