Matthew Elshoff was born on September 24, 1955, in Cincinnati, Ohio, as the first of five children of Calvin and Irene (née Molnar) Elshoff. [2] His family moved to Los Angeles when he was a child, and he attended St. Bede the Venerable Church and Elementary School in La Cañada, Flintridge.

A sizable Sienese community in Rome was established at the end of the 14th century, and first used the church of Santa Maria in Monterone as its home before shifting to Santa Maria sopra Minerva (site of Catherine of Siena's tomb) around the middle of the 15th century.
Savina Petrilli was born on 29 August 1851 in Siena, the second daughter of Celso Petrilli and his wife Matilde Venturini; her elder sister was Emilia. [2] In 1861, at the age of ten, Savina read an account of the life of Catherine of Siena that instilled in her a strong devotion to Catherine.
