Philander and Francis Roots, founders of Roots Blower Company Cover story of February 1880 Scientific American magazine, Manufacture of Rotary Pressure Blowers at Roots, Indiana A Roots blower with two-lobed rotors. Modern Roots blowers may have 2- or 3-lobed rotors.
An Eaton M62 Roots-type supercharger is visible at the front of this Ecotec LSJ engine in a 2006 Saturn Ion Red Line.. The Roots-type blower is simple and widely used. It can be more effective than alternative superchargers at developing positive intake manifold pressure (i.e., above atmospheric pressure) at low engine speeds, making it a popular choice for passenger automobile applications.
Construction of a two-lobed cycloidal rotor. The red curve is an epicycloid and the blue curve is a hypocycloid. A Roots blower is one extreme, a form of cycloid gear where the ratio of the pitch diameter to the generating circle diameter equals twice the number of lobes. In a two-lobed blower, the generating circle is one-fourth the diameter ...
The rotor form is cycloidal, and in this drawing is drawn accurately. In fact, it is part epicycloidal and part hypocycloidal, and in both cases the smaller generating circle is 1/4 the diameter of the circle it rolls around. Roots blowers find uses in superchargers and gas pumps which need a high volume at a low differential pressure.
Each rotor is radially symmetrical, but laterally asymmetric. By comparison, conventional "Roots" type blowers have either identical rotors (with straight rotors) or mirror-image rotors (with helixed rotors). The Whipple-manufactured male rotor has three lobes, the female five lobes. The Kenne-Bell male rotor has four lobes, the female six lobes.
An early example of a lobe pump is the Roots Blower, patented in 1860 [1] to blow combustion air to melt iron in blast furnaces, but now more commonly used as an engine supercharger. Lobe pumps are used in a variety of industries including pulp and paper, chemical, food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology. They are popular in these ...

A type of pneumatic motor, known as a rotary vane motor, uses air to produce rotational motion to a shaft. The rotating element is a slotted rotor which is mounted on a drive shaft. Each slot of the rotor is fitted with a freely sliding rectangular vane. [4]
