Rough River Dam State Resort Park is a Kentucky state park encompassing 637 acres (258 ha) [1] on Rough River Lake in Grayson county. Rough River Dam of 1959, stretching 1,590 feet (480 m) across and 135 feet (41 m) high, creates Rough River Lake, a recreational lake of approximately 5,100 acres (2,100 ha).
The park is located along the Licking River, and offers canoeing and fishing. The Licking River Trail offers a one-mile (1.6 km) hike along the riverbank. [6] Overnight stays are accommodated at the 32-room lodge or the 51-site campground. [8]
The Rough River Lake is a Y-shaped reservoir located in Breckinridge, Hardin, and Grayson counties in Kentucky, United States, about 70 miles southwest of Louisville. [1] This lake was created by the building of a dam, begun in 1955 and completed in 1961, 89.3 miles (143.7 km) above the connection between the Rough River and the Green River .
The camp has five campsites, a dining hall, health lodge, chapel, maintenance building, trading post, field sports range, two cabins, a campfire ring, a camp master cabin and a home occupied by the full time camp Ranger and his family. Camp Soule is used for short-term camping, family camping, training, day camps and various other activities.
Referred to locally as Burnside Island, the state park offers camping, golf, and lake access via boat ramp on the south end of the island. The golf course was voted first place as the Commonwealth Journal Readers Choice Award for "Best Places to Play Golf" in 2009. [3] The following year, it placed second. [4]
Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area is a United States 171,280-acre national recreation area (69,310 ha) in Kentucky and Tennessee between Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. It was designated as a national recreation area in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy and developed using funds appropriated during the Johnson administration .
The land was situated on the western shore of Kentucky Lake near the Eggner's Ferry Bridge. Kentucky Lake had just opened, following completion of the Kentucky Dam in 1944.
