Barasat (/ ˈ b ɑː r ɑː s ɑː t /) is a city and a municipality of North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is the headquarters of Barasat Sadar subdivision . It is a part of the area covered by Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA).

While the Dum Dum-Barasat sector is now part of NH 12, the Barasat-Petrapole sector is now part of NH 112. [1] It continues in Bangladesh as N706 from Benapole to Jessore. The whole road is the part of Asian Highway 1.
It is a part of the historic Jessore Road which runs from Shyambazar in North Kolkata to Jessore in Bangladesh. NH 112 originates from National Highway 12 at Barasat Dak bangalow More and ends at Petrapole near Bangaon, traversing the district of North 24 Parganas. Its eastward continuation, N706 extends to Jessore District in Bangladesh.
In 1824, portions of Barasat, Khulna and Bakhargunge (now in Bangladesh) were also included to it. In 1824, the district headquarters was shifted from Kolkata to Baruipur, but in 1828, it was removed to Alipore. In 1834, the district was split into two districts – Alipore and Barasat, but later these were united again.
The Sealdah–Barasat–Bangaon section is a double line section whereas the Ranaghat–Bangaon–Petrapole–Benapole section is a single line section. [3] In the Barasat–Hasnabad branch line, the Barasat–Sondalia and Lebutala–Champapukur sections are double lined whereas the Champapukur–Hasnabad section is a single line section. [3]
