African masks often represent a spirit and it is strongly believed that the spirit of the ancestors possesses the wearer. Since Africa is such a large and diverse continent, traditional clothing differs throughout each country. For example, many countries in West Africa have a "distinct regional dress styles that are the products of long-standing textile crafts in weaving, dyeing, and printing", but these traditions are still able to coexist with western styles.
During her stay in Machakos, Kenya, Trowell carried out research on art and the artistic ability of the Kamba people which led to writing her first book, African Arts and Crafts, published in 1937. [7] As an advocate for formal art education, Trowell promoted the establishment of the School of Art at Makerere University in 1937. [3]
