Poynter was born in Sullivan, Indiana, in 1903.His family moved to Florida nine years later when his father, Paul Poynter, bought the St. Petersburg Times.Nelson returned to Indiana to get his B.A. from Indiana University and went on to complete a master's degree from Yale University in 1927.

In addition to the Tampa library, the USF Libraries system includes two regional library spaces [105] and the USF Health Libraries. The regional library spaces are the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library, located on the USF St. Petersburg campus, and the Information Commons Hub located on the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus. [105]
The existing study rooms were demolished and eight new study rooms were constructed for patron use. The library officially reopened in January 2023 with all new carpets, staircase, furniture, study rooms, and color scheme. The Hive was removed, and the room was resized and repurposed as a general use room.
