The golf course was located east of the Great Southern Hotel, between Gulfport and Biloxi. In 1910, a clubhouse was built, and the course became the Great Southern Golf and Country Club. Paul B. Johnson State Park is a public recreation area on the shores of Geiger Lake, located off U.S. Highway 49 in McLaurin, Mississippi, 12 miles (19 km) south of Hattiesburg. The state park is named after Paul B. Johnson , the forty-sixth governor of Mississippi .
The 50-mile (80 km) Monadnock-Sunapee Greenway links the park to Pillsbury State Park and southern New Hampshire. The Sunapee-Ragged-Kearsarge Greenway, a 75-mile (121 km) loop trail (the "emerald necklace") links the park to Wadleigh State Park, Winslow State Park, and Rollins State Park as well as Gile, Kearsarge and Shadow Hill state forests and the Bog Mountain Wildlife Management Area.
