Thessaloniki is located on the Thermaic Gulf, at the northwest corner of the Aegean Sea. It is bounded on the west by the delta of the Axios. The Thessaloniki Prefecture (Greek: Νομός Θεσσαλονίκης) was created when the area was annexed by Greece during the First Balkan War in 1913.At that time. its area was the largest prefecture in the country, covering about 7% of the total land.
Greece's population census of 1961 found that 10.9% of the total population was above the age of 65, while the percentage of this group age increased to 19.0% in 2011. In contrast, the percentage of the population of the ages 0–14 had a total decrease of 10.2% between 1961 and 2011.

Thessaloniki Alpha (Greek: εκλογική περιφέρεια Α΄ Θεσσαλονίκης) is an electoral constituency of the Hellenic Parliament. [1] With an electorate of 531,732 eligible voters (as of 2019) in the urban area of Thessaloniki , Central Macedonia , it elects sixteen members of parliament .
