The first New York-Chicago route was provided on January 24, 1853 with the completion of the Toledo, Norwalk and Cleveland Railroad to Grafton, Ohio on the Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati Railroad. Amsterdam station is an Amtrak train station in Amsterdam, New York. It is served by four daily Empire Service round trips plus the daily Maple Leaf ; the Lake Shore Limited does not stop. In earlier eras, such as the postwar 1940s, no named trains from west of Syracuse stopped there.

The Kansas City Zephyr made its inaugural run on February 1, 1953, as an all-new daylight streamliner between Chicago and Kansas City.
