Spring – Swedish singer Esther Gadelius performs songs by Helena Munktell in a concert series by the Société Nationale de Musique in Paris, France. [1]8 April – Carl Nielsen's String Quartet No. 2 is performed in public for the first time, in Copenhagen.
26 June – The first Norwegian music festival is held in Bergen on the initiative of Edvard Grieg, lasting until 3 July. [ 2 ] 19 September – Franz Berwald 's opera Estrella de Soria , is performed at the opening of the new Royal Swedish Opera building in Stockholm.
27 April – Carl Nielsen's first choral work, Hymnus amoris, completed the previous year, receives its première at the Music Society (Musikforeningen) in Copenhagen, with the composer conducting. Viggo Bielefeldt , Tia Krëtma and Katie Adler are the soloists.

25 January – Swedish aristocrat Baron Rolf Cederström (1870–1947) marries world-famous operatic soprano Adelina Patti, who is thirty years his senior. [1]8 April – Andreas Hallén's opera Waldemarsskatten, with a libretto by Axel von Klinkowström, is premièred at the Royal Swedish Opera.
1 January – Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg and Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky meet for the first time, in Leipzig. [1]5 February – Carl Nielsen's String Quartet No. 1 is premiered in the smaller hall of the Odd Fellows Mansion, Copenhagen.
29 May – Jean Sibelius's String Quartet in A minor is premiered at the Helsinki Music Institute. [1]October – Edvard Grieg's 6 Lieder, Op. 48, are performed in Christiania by Swedish soprano Ellen Gulbranson and his 6 Digte af Holger Drachmann by Norwegian baritone Thorvald Lammers.
