Waterloo High School was originally known as "Waterloo Central School" and located on 202 West Main Street. In 1957, construction began on a new senior high school that was completed in time for the 1961 school year. Immediately, grades 9-12 began to be housed at the new building located on Center Street, while grades 7-8 remained on Main Street.
On the 2023 Illinois Report Card, Waterloo High School received an “exemplary” designation, indicating that it performed in the top 10% of public schools statewide in the 2022-23 school year.

The school was founded in 1967 from the merger of the former Atwater and Randolph High Schools. The Waterloo school district was created two years earlier through the merger of the Atwater and Randolph districts on October 15, 1965. [3] The name Waterloo was chosen on October 18, 1965. [4]
