It wears straight from the start and when as it wears the throw out bearing becomes miss aligned and difficult to, well, throw out further exacerbating the wear. When the TOB is miss aligned on the pressure plate fingers the bearing is unequally loaded and this can generate squeaking and other noise when the clutch is engaged. (Foot off pedal.)
The chirping / wine / whirl noise caused by the throwout/release bearing in 2nd gen V6 Tacoma's is caused by a simple engineering issue. The bell housing is made out of aluminium and the bearing is made out of steel. With time the bearing will always cause gouges and marks in the pilot shaft that will cause the chirping and noise issues.
Remove the boots and cover from inside the vehicle. the very last dust boot (the smallest one) just peel it back and you'll see a ring with flat sides. You press it down and turn counter clock wise and it comes right out. I have attached some pictures. A Chilton's manual would have probably save me $130.
Throwout bearing chirp. It goes away when the clutch is engaged. It has 3 new idler pulleys, a new belt, and a new bearing in the tensioner pulley so that rules out the front of the engine. After much research Ive determined that the symptoms match the throwout bearing TSB. I understand the URD sleeve kit is the way to go here.
When the throwout bearing makes noise then you know the bearings are getting dry especially when you lightly press the clutch to engage the bearing to the forks. Many times when you fully depress the clutch the noise will silence itself but a light press you will hear noise.
The noise typically goes away after the car has warmed up, but there are some days it lingers. I have heard that this is a typical problem for Subarus due to a poor part design, which they have a new design for. The local shop quoted me $700, with most of it being labor, to replace the throwout bearing.
I replaced the clutch and throw out bearing at 85k miles. The noise, which sounds like a metallic chirping, persisted. If a small amount of pressure is put on the clutch pedal, the noise is silenced. Otherwise, the chirping persists when idling and can also be heard just as the pedal is depressed when shifting gears.
For some background, my 2016 is stock except for a catback, hella horns, brake pads/rotors/lines, and a dealer-installed STI short shifter. It has 44,000 miles on it and I’m on throwout bearing #3 (bought it at 33,000). I had the TOB replaced once about at 38,000 when it started squeaking, and then again at 43,000 when the clutch started ...
