Zellers was a Canadian discount store chain founded by Walter P. Zeller in 1931. It was acquired by the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) in 1978, and after a series of acquisitions and expansions, peaked with 350 locations in 1999. [2]
Converted to Zellers in 1991. The store converted to Walmart in 2012 as part of 39 Zellers leases sold by Target to Walmart Canada. New Minas (Gardens Mall) Converted to Zellers in 1991. The store was also paired with an IGA grocery store. With the takeover of Towers; Zellers continued operating the two locations during the 1990s.
The family has ties connecting Zellers and Tanner's with Greenville. What began at 124 N. Main St. as the Orange Mill on Main Street in 1943 became named after Zeller's grandmother, Amber Faye Tanner.
The building for JCPenney was added in the 1976 expansion. An A&P grocery store was also an original tenant. It closed when A&P left Fort Wayne in the 1970s, and in 2007 the Barnes & Noble store opened in that area (it was converted from several smaller stores). Sears also opened simultaneously with the mall.
The center also houses the only IMAX theater in the region, which was added in 2011, and is home to the first Vera Bradley company-owned store in Indiana (Fort Wayne is home to the brand). Jefferson Pointe also features market-exclusive stores for Chico's, Eddie Bauer, White House Black Market, Soma Intimates, Bed Bath & Beyond, LOFT, and Talbots.
