Receiving this message for the ps5 vr2 headset recently, too. It doesn't seem like I can buy anything from the direct store at all. This adds to the frustration since playstation direct is the only storefront offering pre-orders at all for vr2. Buying from another retailer is not even possible.
I think the Sony Direct is literally an absolute gamble. I have a higher trophy score than almost everyone on my friends list, and have spent too much money on PSN, and still haven’t been selected in any of the raffles. A friend got selected twice and missed the login time both times. And Sony says they pick people based on PlayStation interests.

i just ordered mine from PS Direct and chose express shipping. it said it’s going to arrive in 1-2 business days, but it hasn’t shipped yet after a business day and i ordered yesterday. how soon is express shipping? UPDATE: my PS5 arrived after around 2 business days, the day after it shipped.
If you’re gonna go with Sony Direct , make sure you have everything saved. The only way to do that is to buy something on Sony Direct prior . I recommend a cheap one month PS Plus. Now the second most important thing to remember is your card security code , because once you served your time in the queue you’ll need it. And Also use Chrome.
Not explicitly, but there are advantages and disadvantages, depending on your priorities. Sony typically ships faster than, say, Walmart. On the flip side, some retailers offer additional "protection plans" that can last longer than Sony's warranty, which may be useful if you play a lot or are rough on your system.
I admittedly can't recall if you need the Online ID chosen too, or simply the Account credentials (Sign-In ID + Password), but if you plan on playing PlayStation anyway might as well play it safe and go to Sony Account Management and make sure you have an Online ID created as well. You'll need one anyway when you're playing on a PS5 online!
The PS5 also being backwards compatible was also a big factor as I definitely wouldn’t have upgraded right now otherwise. But yeah, in general I think it’s a waste to get a console around launch. Especially this generation with all the shortages and scalpers making it very difficult to get one.
(Ha! What a joke!) Nobody has succeeded to purchase a PS5 through today's event (3/17/22) as of yet without using some type of work-a-round such as using a previous invite from an old event. I find this very unprofessional on Sony's behalf as this was a clear violation of their instructions, yet people were able to purchase a PS5 by doing this ...
When Sony is ready to start selling them, the queue starts without warning. You literally have to keep that page open and refresh it from time to time as there is no rime or reason to it. I happened to wake up last Monday at around 6AM (9EST) and checked the site and was able to get one.
