SVG images are defined in a vector graphics format and stored in XML text files. SVG images can thus be scaled in size without loss of quality, and SVG files can be searched, indexed, scripted, and compressed. The XML text files can be created and edited with text editors or vector graphics editors, and are rendered by most web browsers. If ...
Not recognizing the MIME type "image/jpg" there will simply be an empty space where the image is supposed to be. The fix is to open the SVG file in a text editor, find the <image> element, locate "image/jpg", change it to "image/jpeg" and re-save. At right is an example of this problem.
You can do this in inkscape too, using save as "plain SVG". If you save a file as plain SVG and re-open it in inkscape, some of the more advanced "features" may have disappeared. A good example would be the 3D box tool - if you make a 3D box in inkscape, then save it as plain SVG the 3D box is no longer a 3D box, but becomes a a group of paths.
Wikipedia prefers SVG for images such as simple maps, line illustrations, coats of arms, and flags, which generally are not like photographs or other continuous-tone images. [citation needed] Rendering SVG requires conversion to a raster format at a resolution appropriate for the current task. SVG is also a format for animated graphics.
In my opinion option 1 is the best – you should however pick a font which actually is available on Wikipedia to allow the correct rendering of the file (you can use generic families like sans-serif though, or font stacks like Arial,Liberation Sans,sans-serif if your SVG generation worflow allows for it). If you don't want to care about fonts ...
The editability and scalability of SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) make the format the obvious choice for graphic representation of data and illustrations. However, it is not always easy to convert raster images like GIFs, PNGs, or JPEGs to SVG, and some images (especially photos) are not conducive to this treatment.

The SVG format does not have a compression scheme of its own, but due to the textual nature of XML, an SVG graphic can be compressed using a program such as gzip. Because of its scripting potential, SVG is a key component in web applications: interactive web pages that look and act like applications.
