Shaw University is a private historically black university in Raleigh, North Carolina. Founded on December 1, 1865, Shaw University is the oldest HBCU to begin offering courses in the Southern United States. [2] The school had its origin in the formation of a theological class of freedmen in the Guion Hotel.
John Harding Lucas (born November 7, 1920) is an American educator and university administrator. He served as president of Shaw University and was instrumental in founding the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE). [2]

Whatley graduated from Shaw University in 1972 and received his PhD from Stanford University in 1982. In 1983, the Economic History Association awarded him the Allan Nevins Prize for the Best Dissertation in U.S. or Canadian Economic History the previous year.
In 1831, he moved with his family to Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was appointed Justice of the Peace by the Territorial Governor and was subsequently made a Judge of one of the Territorial Courts. In 1835, he was a delegate from the 4th district to the first State Constitutional Convention to prepare for the admission of the State to the Union .
