Sylvester J. Pussycat Sr. is a fictional character, an anthropomorphic cat in the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series of cartoons. [1] Most of his appearances have him often chasing Tweety Bird, Speedy Gonzales, or Hippety Hopper.
Sylvester wants to catch and eat Tweety, but some major obstacle stands in his way – usually Granny or her bulldog Hector (or occasionally, numerous bulldogs, or another cat who also wants to catch and eat Tweety). Tweety says his signature lines "I tawt I taw a puddy tat!" and "I did! I did taw a puddy tat!"
The story opens with Sylvester waiting outside Granny's apartment as she puts Tweety to bed and goes to visit a neighbor. He then sneaks into the apartment and stacks a bunch of furniture to reach the bird cage, but the stack collapses and the fall knocks him out long enough for Tweety to escape.
The Sylvester-chases-Tweety cycle is continually disrupted by a mouse who is even hungrier and more desperate than Sylvester, the mouse seizing upon the idea of eating Sylvester. Sylvester suggests that Tweety play sailboat, but in a pot where he is attempting to cook him. This is interrupted by the mouse discovering Sylvester and gnawing his tail.
Granny leaves Hector in charge of looking after Tweety while she is away. If he fails to protect Tweety, she will shoot Hector. Sylvester tries to eat Tweety, first by disguising himself as a scarecrow (complete with ragged clothes and tall stilts), then Hector starts barking and an annoyed Sylvester hits him with his wooden leg and yells his only spoken line in the cartoon, "Aaaaah, Shaddap!"
Tweety's S.O.S. (1951): The entire boat sequence where Tweety tricked Sylvester into getting seasick and the piece of pork, further inducing the malady. Tree Cornered Tweety (1956): the following two: - In the Alps, the sequence where Sylvester tries to catch Tweety (wearing spoons for snowshoes) on skis, but then crashed into a tree.
Tweety and Sylvester are voiced by Mel Blanc, and Sam, the orange-red cat acting as Sylvester's rival, is performed by an uncredited Daws Butler, doing a voice reminiscent of Frank Fontaine's "John" from The Jack Benny Program and "Crazy Guggenheim" from The Jackie Gleason Show. The title is a play on the phrase "Trick or treat".
