A permanent magnet motor is a type of electric motor that uses permanent magnets for the field excitation and a wound armature. The permanent magnets can either be stationary or rotating; interior or exterior to the armature for a radial flux machine or layered with the armature for an axial flux topology.

In 1954, German mechanical engineer Friedrich Lüling claimed to have realized a motor which could run with its permanent magnets for 10 to 20 years without interruption.
The push type has a push-pin projecting out of the solenoid to push the load away from the solenoid. Magnetically they are the same; i.e., internally the magnetic field attracts the plunger toward the stator pole piece. Most solenoids do not use magnetic repulsion between the magnetic pole and plunger to do the pushing except in rare instances.

The machine illustrated here uses eight disks and nine rows of magnets: 72 magnets in all. The rotors first used were wound as sixteen axial bobbins, one per pole. Compared to the bipolar dynamo, this did have the advantage of more poles giving a smoother output per rotation, [ note 2 ] which was an advantage when driving arc lamps.
