Jackson County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2020 census , the population was 27,791. [ 1 ] Its county seat is Ripley , [ 2 ] and its largest municipality is Ravenswood .
Ravenswood "Old Town" Historic District is a national historic district located at Ravenswood, Jackson County, West Virginia.It encompasses 313 contributing buildings and two contributing structures, the Ohio River Rail Road Steel Pratt-through truss Bridge and Concrete bridge on State Route 68 over Sandy Creek.
Notable buildings include the U.S. Post Office, Phillips/Pfost House, Alpine Theater, Hockenberry Store building, Jackson County Courthouse (1918-1920), the Beymer House, and the Hinzman House. Located within the district is the separately listed Clerc-Carson House. [2] It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004. [1]
Kenna is an unincorporated community in southern Jackson County, West Virginia, United States. It lies along West Virginia Route 34 just west of its interchange with Interstate 77, south of the city of Ripley, the county seat of Jackson County. [1] Its elevation is 787 feet (240 m). [2]
Washington acquired the 2,448-acre (10 km 2) parcel in 1770, and designated Colonel William Crawford to survey the lands in 1771. A permanent settlement was first established in 1810, and the town streets and lots were laid out in their current pattern by descendants of Washington in 1835. [ 6 ]
Rankin Octagonal Barn is a historic octagonal barn located near Silverton, Jackson County, West Virginia. It was built about 1890, and is an eight-sided frame structure covered with vertical wide board siding. Each side of the octagon measures 24 feet in length. It features a central cupola to provide light and ventilation. [2]
The U.S. state of West Virginia has 55 counties. Fifty of them existed at the time of the Wheeling Convention in 1861, during the American Civil War, when those counties seceded from the Commonwealth of Virginia to form the new state of West Virginia.
