Sylar is first referenced in the first episode when Mohinder Suresh (Chandra Suresh's son) finds a cassette tape labeled "SYLAR" on both sides in his dead father's New York apartment. His character is next mentioned in the series as a mysterious serial killer sought out by the FBI , whose existence is completely speculative.
Angela is horrified to find Nathan's dead body. Noah brings them the unconscious Sylar, and he and Angela convince a very reluctant Matt to alter Sylar's mind to believe he is Nathan, reasoning that he was the only person who could shut down any future "Agency". Matt succeeds, causing Sylar to take on Nathan's appearance and identity.

They escaped him and then followed him to his mother's. Hiro did not want to kill Sylar, but Ando showed Hiro the "9th Wonders!" comic page which shows him dead.
Sylar appears behind Meredith and telekinetically throws away Meredith’s gun. Eric Doyle appears and takes control of Sylar before Sylar overpowers him, leaving him lying on the ground bleeding from his nose. He then injects Meredith with adrenaline. Noah finds Echo DeMille dead and Meredith in a cell, flaming out of control.
In this interview with Bryan Fuller (Already cited on Sylar's page), he says that Sylar's power is an "inherent understing and adaptability", and he was able to use his powers in the cell to kill Eden because he was "playing possum".
