The Indian Railways Institute of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering (IRIMEE) was founded in 1888 as a technical school and commenced training Mechanical Officers for Indian Railways in 1927. It is the oldest of the five Centralised Training Institutes (CTIs) for training officers for Indian Railways.

The degree programme in Mechanical Engineering has been in existence since the inception of the college in 1997. The course is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE). The course is of four years duration, each year consisting of two semesters. The students undertake a project during the final year.
The final year students have done excellent projects and 6 of them got sponsored by the Govt of Karnataka through Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology, Bangalore. The students presented their projects for review at an engineering college in Hubli in June 2016 which was appreciated by the reviewers.
Candidates who have a Degree/Diploma in Mechanical Engineering / Automobile Engineering / Electrical & Electronics Engineering / Electronics & Communication Engineering / Mechatronics / Applied Electronics and equivalent disciplines. Final year B.Tech. students with 6.5 CGPA till seventh semester and without live back papers are also eligible.
IEEE PES RVCE chapter was Inaugurated in the year 2015 which organises events pertaining to Electrical Engineering. Other projects. Garuda, a fuel-efficient, aerodynamic car, was designed by the Mechanical engineering students. The car reportedly gives a mileage of 180 kilometers per litre of fuel.
