An adjacent post office named Diamond Lake, Oregon, was established in 1925 and ran until 1956, when it was changed to a summer-only office. [21] The official name of the lake was updated from "Lake Wanaka" to "Lake Wānaka" in 2019, [2] and the town's name to "Wānaka" in 2021. [22]
There are 51 campsites available for overnight use, between May and October, with payment of an adequate reservation fee. A 10-mile (16 km) trail system is open to hikers and horseback riders, as well as snowshoers and snowmobilers in winter. [1] A 20-acre (8.1 ha) picnic area with 40 individual picnic sites is available for use.
