A Tesla coil is an electrical resonant transformer circuit designed by inventor Nikola Tesla in 1891. [1] It is used to produce high-voltage, low-current, high-frequency alternating-current electricity. [2] [3] Tesla experimented with a number of different configurations consisting of two, or sometimes three, coupled resonant electric circuits.
In toroidal SMES, the coil is always under compression by the outer hoops and two disks, one of which is on the top and the other is on the bottom to avoid breakage. Currently, there is little need for toroidal geometry for small SMES, but as the size increases, mechanical forces become more important and the toroidal coil is needed.
Bifilar wound toroidal transformer, also known as a common-mode choke. A different type of bifilar coil is used in some relay windings and transformers used for a switched-mode power supply to suppress back-emf. In this case, the two wire coils are closely spaced and wound in parallel but are electrically isolated from each other.
A standard MPP core saturates at around 0.75 Tesla. A ferrite core saturates at around 0.45 Tesla. Molypermalloy powder cores are commonly used in the making of: flyback transformers, resonant circuits, quartz filters, loading coils, choke coils, pulse transformers, and other industrial and military circuits. [1]
However, at points a distance of several times the winding spacing, the toroid does look symmetric. [7] There is still the problem of the circumferential current. No matter how many times the winding encircles the core and no matter how thin the wire, this toroidal inductor will still include a one coil loop in the plane of the toroid.
In electrical engineering, coil winding is the manufacture of electromagnetic coils. Coils are used as components of circuits, and to provide the magnetic field of motors, transformers, and generators, and in the manufacture of loudspeakers and microphones. The shape and dimensions of a winding are designed to fulfill the particular purpose.
