Tarija (Spanish pronunciation: ⓘ) is a department in Bolivia. It is located in south-eastern Bolivia bordering with Argentina to the south and Paraguay to the east. According to the 2024 census, it has a population of 534,348 inhabitants. It has an area of 37,623 km 2 (14,526 sq mi). The city of Tarija is the capital of the department.
It is located at an altitude of 1,230 metres (4,040 ft) at the confluence of Río Tambo and one of its tributaries, 110 kilometres (68 mi) and a three-hour ride east of Tarija, the departmental capital. The town is bordered by north-southerly mountain ranges and situated in an elongated triangular hollow of 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) length.
