He graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point with a degree in Bachelor of Music Education with an emphasis in saxophone. He then taught Grade 5-8 instrumental music for 19 years in the Wisconsin public schools. He started playing in the Wausau Concert Band in 1979, and has been the conductor since 2005.
The band split in 1981, after legal wranglings and internal disagreements. Members of the group went on to form bands including Pigbag, Maximum Joy, Head and Rip Rig & Panic. Portishead: trip hop band and purveyors of the Bristol Sound (1991–present). Consists of Geoff Barrow, Beth Gibbons and Adrian Utley.
The Faire was founded in 1982 by the late Richard Shapiro and his wife Bonnie, who ran the original "King Richard's Faire" in Bristol, Wisconsin (which was renamed Bristol Faire when the Shapiros sold it to Renaissance Entertainment Corporation in 1988). Today, Bonnie and her daughter Aimée Shapiro Sedley produce the show.

The Anderson Ponty Band (APB) rehearsed for two weeks at the Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg, PA in anticipation of the 27 October 2015 show in Glenside, PA (the originally planned start of the tour). Then the Sherman Theater asked the band to play a show in Stroudsburg before the true beginning of the tour.
