In 1965 an ordinance which contained 13 different zoning districts was adopted. Planning and zoning functions were coordinated with the adoption of the township's first Master Plan in 1972 and subsequently the adoption of an entirely new zoning ordinance the following year. The 1973 ordinance serves as a basis for the current zoning ordinance.
As of the census [1] of 2000, there were 1,270 people, 458 households, and 348 families residing in the township. The population density was 36.1 inhabitants per square mile (13.9/km 2).

Royal Oak Township was established in 1833 as a regular, 36-square-mile (93 km 2) civil township, and at one time consisted of all or parts of the following modern cities: Hazel Park, Ferndale, Oak Park, Madison Heights, Pleasant Ridge, Huntington Woods, Royal Oak, Berkley, and Clawson.
