Regional Science High School was established during the School Year 1994-1995 by virtue of the Department of Education, Culture and Sports (DECS) Order No. 69, series 1993 "to provide for a more intensive and advanced secondary education program with special reference to science".
In August 2001, the Governance of Basic Education Act [4] was passed, renaming the DECS to the Department of Education (DepEd) and redefining the role of field offices, which include regional offices, division offices, district offices, and schools. The Act removed the administration of cultural and sports activities from the department.
The first regional campuses were built, starting with the Mindanao Campus (now Southern Mindanao Campus), in Davao City, in 1988. By the early 1990s the Visayas Campus (now Eastern Visayas Campus) was established through Republic Act 7373 known as An Act Establishing The Eastern Visayas Science High School .
