In medicine, the Comorbidity–polypharmacy score (CPS) is a measure of overall severity of comorbidities. [1] It is defined as the simple sum of the number of known comorbidities (concurrent conditions) and pre-admission medications taken by the patient ( polypharmacy ), as a surrogate for the “intensity” of the comorbidities.
This score has been tested and validated extensively in the trauma population, demonstrating good correlation with mortality, morbidity, triage, and hospital readmissions. [72] [73] [74] Of interest, increasing levels of CPS were associated with significantly lower 90-day survival in the original study of the score in trauma population. [72]
For children, the Lansky score is used. Another common system is the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) system. Parallel scoring systems include the Global Assessment of Functioning (GAF) score, which has been incorporated as the fifth axis of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual (DSM) of psychiatry .
