If the sum contains more than one digit, the value of the tens place is carried into the next diagonal (see Step 2). Step 2. Numbers are filled to the left and to the bottom of the grid, and the answer is the numbers read off down (on the left) and across (on the bottom). In the example shown, the result of the multiplication of 58 with 213 is ...
The grid method (also known as the box method) of multiplication is an introductory approach to multi-digit multiplication calculations that involve numbers larger than ten. Because it is often taught in mathematics education at the level of primary school or elementary school , this algorithm is sometimes called the grammar school method.
This method uses three multiplications rather than four to multiply two two-digit numbers. (A variant of this can also be used to multiply complex numbers quickly.) Done recursively , this has a time complexity of O ( n log 2 3 ) {\displaystyle O(n^{\log _{2}3})} .
(A blank space or zero to the upper left of each digit, separated by a diagonal line, should be understood, since 1 × 1 = 01, 1 × 2 = 02, 1 x 3 = 03, etc.) A small number is chosen, usually 2 through 9, by which to multiply the large number. In this example the small number by which to multiply the larger is 6.
In this example, the rule says: multiply 3 by 2, getting 6. The sets {A, B, C} and {X, Y} in this example are disjoint sets, but that is not necessary. The number of ways to choose a member of {A, B, C}, and then to do so again, in effect choosing an ordered pair each of whose components are in {A, B, C}, is 3 × 3 = 9.
Indeed, multiplication by 3, followed by division by 3, yields the original number. The division of a number other than 0 by itself equals 1. Several mathematical concepts expand upon the fundamental idea of multiplication. The product of a sequence, vector multiplication, complex numbers, and matrices are all examples where this can be seen.
