FC Amsterdam was a Dutch football club which was founded on 20 June 1972, from the merger of the Amsterdam football clubs Blauw Wit and DWS. The club Volewijckers joined the side for the 1973–1974 season, in which season FC Amsterdam finished as 5th of the 18 clubs in the Dutch top-league.
AFC was founded in 1895 when a group of young Amsterdammers decided to create a football club. On 18 January 1895 the founding meeting took place in the basement of a house on the Koninginneweg where after a long discussion the name "Amsterdamsche Football Club (AFC)" was chosen. [1] The meeting was held by six boys aged fifteen and sixteen.
Blauw Wit, DWS and De Volewijckers merged to form FC Amsterdam in 1972, which ceased to exist in 1982. PEC and the Zwolsche Boys merged to form PEC Zwolle in 1971, which became FC Zwolle in 1990. Amsterdamsche Football Club Door Wilskracht Sterk (English: Amsterdam Football Club Strong Through Willpower), also referred to as AFC DWS, Door Wilskracht Sterk or simply DWS, is a Dutch football club from Amsterdam, currently competing in the Tweede Klasse (English: Second Class), the fifth tier of amateur football in the Netherlands. Amsterdam is home of the Eredivisie football club AFC Ajax. The stadium Johan Cruyff Arena is the home of Ajax. It is located in the south-east of the city next to the Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA railway station. Before moving to their current location in 1996, Ajax played their regular matches in De Meer Stadion. [1]
Following FC Blauw-Wit's relegation from the top flight after the 1971–72 season, an Amsterdam derby between both clubs in the league is not possible. The last meeting between the two clubs was in July 2003, with Ajax winning the pre-season friendly match with a 0–11 score at Sportpark Sloten.
